Redescription of the Cephalaspidea gastropod Atys jeffreysi (Weinkauff, 1866) (Haminoeidae), with a discussion on the phylogenetic affinities of the Mediterranean species of the genus

Atys jeffreysi is a heterobranch Cephalaspidea gastropod belonging to the family Haminoeidae occurring in the Mediterranean Sea, Madeira and Canary archipelagos. Nearly nothing is known about the internal anatomical features of this species. In this paper we redescribe the species A. jeffreysi based on fine anatomical work and scanning electron microscopy. DNA barcodes are provided for the first time for A. jeffreysi and A. macandrewii, the only two species of the genus native in the Mediterranean Sea. The genetic distance (COI uncorrected p-distance) between them is estimate at 21.6%. A Bayesian molecular phylogeny based on the gene marker cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) including all sequences available of the genera Aliculastrum, Liloa and Atys species did not support a sister relationship between the two Mediterranean species and suggests that they are more closely related to distinct Indo-West Pacific lineages. The complex systematics of the genus Atys is briefly discussed.     

Metric Models for Random Graphs

Many problems entail the analysis of data that are independent and identically distributed random graphs. Useful inference requires flexible probability models for such random graphs; these models should have interpretable location and scale parameters, and support the establishment of confidence regions, maximum likelihood estimates, goodness-of-fit tests, Bayesian inference, and an appropriate analogue of linear model theory. Banks and Carley (1994) develop a simple probability model and sketch some analyses; this paper extends that work so that analysts are able to choose models that reflect application-specific metrics on the set of graphs. The strategy applies to graphs, directed graphs, hypergraphs, and trees, and often extends to objects in countable metric spaces.     

The effect of piroxicam on platelet aggregation

Summary Piroxicam inhibited aggregation of human and dog platelets caused by collagen, but not by adenosine diphosphate (ADP). Release of platelet ADP was inhibited by piroxicam.     

A tissue-selective prostaglandin E2 analog with potent antifertility effects.

N-methanesulfonyl 16-phenoxy-omega-tetranor PGE2 is a prostaglandin analog which is markedly more tissue selective than PGE2. This compound is 10-30 times more potent than PGE2 in animal models which are considered relevant to antifertility effects in humans. In pharmacological tests which are believed to be predictive for side effects in humans, the compound has potency either equal to or less than that of PGE2.     

An ancient nova shell around the dwarf nova Z Camelopardalis

Cataclysmic variables (classical novae and dwarf novae) are binary star systems in which a red dwarf transfers hydrogen-rich matter, by way of an accretion disk, to its white dwarf companion. In dwarf novae, an instability is believed to episodically dump much of the accretion disk onto the white dwarf. The liberation of gravitational potential energy then brightens these systems by up to 100-fold every few weeks or months. Thermonuclear-powered eruptions thousands of times more luminous occur in classical novae, accompanied by significant mass ejection and formation of clearly visible shells from the ejected material. Theory predicts that the white dwarfs in all dwarf novae must eventually accrete enough mass to undergo classical nova eruptions. Here we report a shell, an order of magnitude more extended than those detected around many classical novae, surrounding the prototypical dwarf nova Z Camelopardalis. The derived shell mass matches that of classical novae, and is inconsistent with the mass expected from a dwarf nova wind or a planetary nebula. The shell observationally links the prototypical dwarf nova Z Camelopardalis with an ancient nova eruption and the classical nova process.     

Histamine release in dogs by Emulphor EL620.

A vehicle containing ethanol and Emulphor EL620 lowers blood pressure and increases heart rate in morphine-chloralose anesthetized dogs. These effects are associated with histamine release caused by Emulphor EL620.
